DESCRIPTION AND BASIC USE
• MATCRETE® Dustone
Colorseal™ Cure Coat is a premium-quality water base curing compound for
colored concrete. Dustone Colorseal is an environmentally sound curing
membrane that complies with stringent air quality regulations.
Color-matched to the concrete color, or used in Natural Gray on uncolored
concrete, Dustone Colorseal is an ideal curing material where a uniform
appearance is desired and the concrete will be allowed to weather
naturally. Dustone Colorseal is designed to be used as a membrane curing
compound on freshly placed colored concrete flatwork. Dustone Colorseal
dries semi-transparent, enhancing and evening the color of the concrete
while retaining a natural, non-painted look.
LIMITATIONS •
Dustone Colorseal is not a paint nor
is it intended to hide defects in workmanship or to color uncolored
concrete. Although Dustone Colorseal contains anti-slip materials, wax
type sealers can increase the slipperiness of concrete slabs; especially
on smoother finishes. Judgment must be used by the applicator to apply
Dustone Colorseal where the increased slipperiness will not create a
safety hazard. Application of Dustone Colorseal to steep ramps, swimming
pool decks, steeply sloped walkways and driveways should be avoided. As
with most concrete sealers, Dustone Colorseal will increase the
slipperiness of the slab when the surface is wet. Never use Dustone
Colorseal on untextured or unbroomed concrete surfaces. DO NOT apply if
temperature is below 60°F or above 95°F.
STORAGE •
Store in a safe place, out of direct
sunlight and away from heat sources. Keep containers tightly sealed. DO
NOT allow product to freeze. Shelf life is approximately 8 to 12 months.
COVERAGE •
Coverage rates will vary between 500
to 700 square feet per gallon of unthinned Dustone Colorseal. Depending
on the finish and porosity of the concrete; a rougher, more textured
finish will use more Dustone Colorseal than smoother surfaces. Weather
conditions and method of application can also cause coverage rates to
vary.
PREPARATION •
When using Dustone Colorseal as a
curing compound, the color of Dustone Colorseal should be matched as
closely as possible to the color of the concrete after the concrete is
fully cured and totally dry. Before applying Dustone Colorseal, protect
all surrounding areas where color is not desired.
THINNING •
Dustone Colorseal can be thinned with
clean (tap) water at the rate(s) of 1 part Dustone Colorseal to 1 part
water, minimum, and up to 1 part Dustone Colorseal to 3 parts water,
maximum. Varying thinning rates allow the user flexibility to compensate
for different methods of application, concrete finishes, job and weather
conditions. When using pump-up spray equipment, Dustone Colorseal must be
thin enough to be sprayed in a very fine mist. Rough textured concrete
finishes often require thinning to prevent material building up in the
lower spots on the surface. On warmer days, a thinner mixture will allow
more time to work and spread Dustone Colorseal on the slab without
excessive build up. On cooler days, a thicker mixture spread extra thin
will dry quicker and stronger. Since Dustone Colorseal dries
semi-transparent, the more Dustone Colorseal is thinned prior to
application the less its coloring effect on the concrete surface will be
per coat. Generally 1 part Dustone Colorseal to 2 parts water is suitable
in most instances and is the recommended starting point.
APPLICATION •
For best results, Dustone Colorseal
should be applied when the surface temperature is between 55°F and 85°F. Loosen
pigment from bottom of pail with stirring tool and stir until color of
liquid becomes homogeneous. To ensure sufficient and uniform coverage, Dustone Colorseal should not be thinned more than the maximum rate
described in the THINNING section. Apply thinned Dustone Colorseal
to freshly placed colored concrete after all bleed water and surface
sheen has evaporated, finishing has been completed and concrete has
achieved an initial set. Dustone Colorseal may be sprayed, rolled or
brushed. If spray equipment is not available, a short nap paint roller
can be used. However, a roller may leave streaks and overlap marks and
will result in a "painted" appearance. A powered airless sprayer produces
the best spray pattern. When spray application is desired, filter thinned
Dustone Colorseal through a paint strainer Apply with new or clean
airless or pump-up sprayer that is free from any resin, oil or solvent
residue. Use sparingly with sprayer on lightest mist setting for maximum
atomization of spray. Ordinary pump-up canister sprayers for garden or
construction use will NOT atomize spray adequately. Use canister spray
designed for application of wood finishes or form release agents with the
smallest available flat-fan spray tip (.10 to .30 GPM). Spray Dustone
Colorseal in a very fine mist uniformly to the slab using just enough per
coat to wet the entire surface. Allow to dry prior to applying follow up
coats. Avoid overlapping strokes and over spraying, which may cause
material to puddle on the slab. If any puddling occurs due to a clogged
or spitting sprayer or over-applications; immediately with a damp paint
brush or soft concrete broom, brush out all areas of excessive or uneven
application by spreading Dustone Colorseal to adjacent areas on the slab
in a thin even coat to obtain a uniform appearance. The color of Dustone
Colorseal in liquid form will appear to be lighter than the final shade
when dry.
